New Arrivals From American Fitness Couture
What It Is: Three different styles of racerback workout tops designed by exercise physiologist Linda LaRue for her L.A.-based activewear company American Fitness Couture.
What You Might Not Know: American Fitness Couture first started out making fitness pants that promise NOT to be see-through!
Feelin’ the Love: I was interested in test-driving these three tanks, just released for Spring 2015, because each one is a little (or a lot) different from anything else I’ve got in my workout wardrobe. Here are my impressions.
Think of the Essential Fitted Racerback Tank ($48 USD) as one of those activewear staples. It’s admittedly nothing fancy, but it scored some huge points.
First, it’s long, hitting just below my hip bones (I’m 5’5″). This length looks modern and feels functional. For example, it stayed put around my hips whether I was doing a dead-lift or a Down Dog.
Second, I like that this tank was purposely designed NOT to have one of those built-in shelf bras. You can easily slip it on over a good sports bra without having to squeeze said bra into a built-in shelf. If you’ve ever had to do this, you know that doubling up a regular bra and shelf bra can feel constricting.
My favorite feature is how the fabric feels. VERY soft. My personal trainer even commented on it when he was adjusting my form at the gym.
This one is my top pick of the trio I tried, and at a great price-point: $34 USD! The “Danielle” Boyfriend Tank is exactly what you’d want from a modern, boyfriend-inspired style: A little loose and airy around the midsection but cut to be nicely fitted at the bust.
You could wear your Boyfriend Tank untucked if you want it to cover your butt, but it’s also long and loose enough to messily half-tuck into workout tights at the front (my preferred style).
The thin-ish fabric is a new tech-type that’s moisture-wicking and anti-microbial to stave off stink. For this reason, I’ve already packed it in my suitcase for several trips this season.
If you’re buying a workout tank called Sweet & Sexy On You Sweetheart Top ($62 USD), you know you’re in for something a little off the hook.
With a design that mixes mesh, vegan leather and Spandex/Nylon, this chic tank could easily cross over from Barre class to the bar.
At first, I wasn’t sure if the (washable) vegan leather running down the sides and along the neckline would be comfortable for getting all sweaty in, but I didn’t notice it at all. Plus the mesh made the top’s overall construction quite breathable.
If I Could Change One Thing: While I appreciate that the Essential Fitted Racerback Tank comes without a shelf-bra, I would have actually liked to have one—the kind with removable foam cups—in the Sweet & Sexy Top.
My bra showed through the mesh at the top and sides, taking away from the visual interest of the “sweetheart” design (see photo below). It goes without saying that wearing a strapless bra for a workout is out of the question.
Should You Buy These? Whether you need to stock up on staples or you’re looking for more of an edge, there’s something for everyone on the American Fitness Couture website. Have a browse around. Tops range from about $27 to $62 USD. Everything’s made in America.
And don’t forget to check out the pants. They do hold to their promise of not being see-through.
